Millions around the world have seen Disney’s The Lion King, the stage version of the beloved cartoon feature. The choreographer behind every movement on stage? Garth Fagan. The musical swept the Tonys in 1998 with awards for best musical, direction, choreography, scenery, costumes and lighting design. It was lauded in all the major New York theater awards that year, picked up a Grammy for best musical show album, an Astaire Award for Fagan, as well as awards in Los Angeles, London, Toronto, Japan, Germany, Australia and the Netherlands. Having just celebrated its 20th anniversary, The Lion King plays to this day around the world!
“As a dancer, you spend all your life developing your body. ... All of a sudden you’re wearing puppets. As a dancer, you know how you can leap and how you can turn, but suddenly you have an antelope on your head and one on each arm. It’s going to affect your center — you have to leap and carry your head differently.”
